The impact of incorporating cloud services in your IT service organization is more than only a changes in the service management process. If your organization wants to take advantage of all what public cloud offers then it requires to become a facilitating organization instead of a delivery organization where your customers, the business, profits from automation of services, self-service, resource flexibility and rapid deployment. It also requires a shift in control structures, culture and responsibilities.
Larger organizations will not be able to move their whole IT organization is one go to a agile DEVOPS oriented organization. Realistically there will be two ways of working that will be used to support applications running in the cloud or still on premise. The traditional way of working with strict change control will conflict in many ways with an agile way of working according to DEVOPS and cloud principles. Organizations however should keep in mind that even for the first category applications that require strict change control, the cloud service underneath it will change without notice. Organisations need to consider:
One advantage of the cloud is the use of automation. Many objects that are used in the cloud can be developed (scripted) instead of traditionally build. This implies that changes in the clouds infrastructure can and will be fully automated. The tools to develop applications in the cloud are in line with this development also engaged to do automated changes into applications in the cloud. This also changes the way we can approach disaster recovery. Instead of the traditional shadow infrastructure in place we can also consider rebuild of the total cloud foundation fully automated. DEVOPS is enabling development teams to use and execute these automated procedures and tools and with that avoiding to rely on traditional infrastructure teams that are lined up to do these kind of changes, instead are able to make the changes themselves at the end of an development iteration. This is only one example of how the IT organization becomes more a facilitator then a delivery organizations.
To help our customers we look at all the processes and determine where they need to adopt. Information Security Management, change management, business finance management and demand supply process are just a few examples of processes that need to be reviewed and adapted.
